REVIEW: Commandos 2 is hard as nails, make no mistakes about it, the sequel to one of the hardest games on the PC is no different in terms of difficulty, anyone who says different is wrong. Even the easiest setting (normal) will have you wracking your brains for solution. Having never played the original, only hearing about it from friends, I thought to myself I shouldn't jump straight into the deep end, and played the game on the normal difficulty - if you are new to the RTS genre, then I advice you to start at this point. After playing through the two tutorials and the first level, I immediately felt sorry for the people playing this game on anything above the normal difficulty.

Pyro Studios, the games developers had said that the Commandos 2 won't be as difficult to play as the first and will appeal to a wider gaming audience. when hearing this, I took it to mean that the game will be dumbed down so it can be ported to next-gen consoles. But after playing the game, I realised how wrong I was. The PC version of the game will be different to console versions and is still as hard as ever. The levels in the game are huge and will take you some hours to get through this isn't helped by the fact that the level are always crawling with German - or Japanese solders, who are smarter than ever. Enemies in the game will react to not only sight, but sound as well, so this means that if you start running and there is a guard to close, he will investigate, the same goes for jumping from high places, swimming to fast and anything that involves speed. So your best bet is to take it slow. Guns also attract unwanted attention. There are two parts to enemy field of vision, there's the close range view and long range view. If one of your commandos is spotted in the close range view, then you won't be attacked straight away, you will have limited time (around 6 seconds in normal) in which you must get out of sight otherwise the alarm will be raised. This time decreases as the difficulty increase. A problem with this is that when you are carrying a enemy body and ignorantly stumble into a guard's long range view, he will just stare at you while you go and dispose of the body.

There are ten missions plus two tutorials to guide you nine commandos around. this may not sound like a lot, but considering the levels are huge and will take you hours to complete makes it worth while, there's also the fact that most of the time you will be controlling no more than five of the commandos, sometimes just one. And there bonus missions to find, that's right, bonus missions. during each level you might come across a red book in a cupboard or drawer that just disappears when clicked on, collect all of these and you will access the bonus mission for the mission you're on. There are ten in all, and although they're not as long as regular missions, they will increase the longevity of the game. The missions themselves will see you travel across different environments that include desert, towns, snow covered landscapes and more. All levels have realistic weather effects, rain, snow and all of that. A new feature in the game is the ability to rotate the camera which enable you to move in and out of indoor environments much easier, this means that indoors will be a bigger part of the game, you can climb through windows snipe through windows and much more.

The game graphics have also been improved, which were actually hand drawn then computerised for an authentic feel. Explosions, ripples in water, footprints in snow are all here. The detail in the game is absolutely brilliant, you will see details in graphics as well as in animation, guards light and put out cigarettes, you own commandos will start shivering when out in the cold, guards shout out and give orders to one another.

If you are a fan of the Commandos games, then this is definitely for you, or if your just a RTS fan in general, you could do much worse than this. Some people may be put off by the difficulty of the game, but then they'll just be missing out on a great game.
