REVIEW: "Pure genius" is what it says on the cover of this game, "pure genius" is what I said after playing this game". Black & White is - in technical terms - definitely one of the best games ever to grace the PC, in terms of consumers, it's simple, you either love it or you hate it. It seems to be split down the middle at the moment, with some people hating the large amounts of micro-management, and others loving the creature training. Anyway, I think this game is great and that's why i gave it 9 out of 10. The game is about you and that fact that you are a God, you start off without a creature and have to complete a fairly straightforward task to get one. It is all about being the one and only God in this game, as you fight it out with some other Gods for supremacy over 5 islands until you get to the last showdown.

The story for the game is not excellent, but what is the best thing about this game is the creature. When you start, you get to pick from three different creatures: a tiger, monkey and a cow. But as you go on, you can switch between other creatures, like a sheep, leopard, bear etc. You can also add on creatures by downloading an add-on. The creatures are an example of the stunning AI that is in this game, they will learn when you teach them (over time) they react to your actions, weather it's planting trees or throwing villagers. Your creature is what you use to gain influence over villagers, which will eventually allow you to take over that village. You can mould your creature to be just like you, and when you progress far enough you will be amazed how your creature resembles your personality. That is all I will say about the creatures, but I assure you that there is more.

The lands that you play over are very large and have lots of surprises littered around, like spells and scrolls. One criticism of the scrolls I have is that there aren't enough of them, but there are very good despite this. The graphics are ok, not brilliant but ok.

Black & White is a game that will let you see want kind of person you are, to help you make decisions you have a conscience, well two of them, a good and bad one. These two characters will offer their advise when you are faced with tasks and things, they also argue a lot. You can take all of the advise of the bad one or all the advise of the good one, or you can mix. The consequences of this will be represented in how you villagers look at you, you can scare them into believing in you, or help them in everyday tasks. There are also other consequences like your catidal will start to change to represent your alignment, and also grow or shrink depending on you influence.

One of the major criticisms you will here about this game is the huge amount of micro-management that you will have to do. This is because most of the villagers are really lazy and require you to do everything for them from getting wood and food to getting them to mate. I have to admit that this can be a problem at times especially when you want to spend some time with your creature (damn, I wasn't supposed to mention that). Generally, the villagers will spend a lot of time moaning, and you will spend a lot of time trying to stop them from moaning.
Either way, this game is brilliant and you would be a fool not to at least try it out. If you like micro-management in a game then you can't go wrong with this, and the great AI along with the creatures is enough to get anyone to buy this game.
